Cheryl Skynar kick-started her business, Skynar Bookkeeping, when she helped a friend do payroll so she could get to the neighborhood barbecue on time.
By pumping out the payroll for her neighbor at a record pace, she made a client for life, and, as a result of the referrals stemming from that day, launched a new full-time business.
Skynar’s experience with bookkeeping stems back 33 years, working with most of her clients out of her home office. In 2014, when she landed several Tech Town Detroit and Ann Arbor start-up gigs, she knew she needed to expand the operation.
She then opened an office close to home in Plymouth with Heide McInerney and Mary Raupp. Expanding again, she hired her husband, Tom, to manage sales, marketing and special projects. Now along with payroll and book keeping, the firm started offering QuickBooks training programs. Skynar is at the top of the list when researching a Local Intuit Pro Advisor in this area.
It was after Tom met with Trenton certified public accountant Rob Bovitz at his Canton office that they realized an opportunity in the Downriver area.
“I have so many clients that either need QuickBooks training or services,” said Bovitz, “I am glad Skynar moved closer so I can refer them additional business.”
When they heard there was an office open at the Executive Suites of Trenton, they immediately signed a lease and hired Paula Canne to manage their second office. Canne most recently held a successful office management position with a law firm in Cleveland, as well as a number of other privately held businesses throughout her career. She resides in the Downriver area.
“We do QuickBook set up, clean up, keep up and training,” said owner Cheryl Skynar. “The whole staff loves organizing business owner financial chaos and enjoys showing them that QuickBooks can be used as a business tool.”
They also teach how to read financial reports which many owners just do not know how to do. “Most owners are just good at what they do,” said Skynar, “We help with the reporting, taxes, and payroll so they can feel confident those items are taken care of and they can concentrate on their business.”
They service more than 100 clients with accounts receivables and payables; monthly, quarterly and yearly financial reports; payroll and numerous other bookkeeping functions. They are also authorized QuickBooks resellers. Cheryl has held the distinction of being an Advanced Certified QuickBooks Desktop ProAdvisor since 2012 and is certified in all QuickBooks products. Earlier this year she added the certification of Advanced Certified in QuickBooks Online. This sets her among the top 5 percent of ProAdvisors in the country.
In addition to being dedicated to Skynar Bookkeeping, the Skynars are equally dedicated to local professional business-to-business building and assisting businesses of all sizes “set up, clean up, and keep up” with their QuickBooks bookkeeping.
They run the Southeast Michigan B2B Networking Group and host events at local restaurants and establishments monthly. For more information, visit www.semichb2b.com.
