With many Trenton-area military stationed overseas, a driven cadet Girl Scout, Elizabeth Popovich, is leading an effort to make sure no soldier from our area goes without a box of Girls Scout cookies.
For the past five years this enthusiastic young lady has collected $40,000 to send 9,971 boxes of cookies to brave men and women serving in other countries. She came up with the idea when selling cookies and was often told by people that they don’t eat cookies or have an allergy. So she said, “Then would you like to donate a box of cookies to our troops overseas?”
Eventually, Popovich took it to the next level and now asks businesses to send a case, which includes 12 boxes for $48. One-hundred percent of the donation goes to buy the cookies and Operation Care Package, a non-profit organization, handles the distribution for her cause. She has served up treats to those serving in Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East and many have contacted her to say how much they appreciate it.
“One thing I have learned from this endeavor is people love to support our troops and it is a win-win for everyone,” Popovich said.
