Realty group leader calls Trenton home
BY KATHY KANE
Our Interesting Neighbor this month is well known for her leadership over the years at the Down River Association of Realtors. She also happens to be a longtime resident of Trenton. Meet Elaine Adkins.
KK: Being with the Downriver Association of Realtors you could have chosen any city Downriver to live. Why Trenton?
Elaine Adkins: I grew up in Trenton and have always loved the city. I’ve raised my family here and actually we now have three generations that have graduated from Trenton High School. Myself, my daughters and this June my third grandchild will be graduating from Trenton. Two years ago we celebrated out 50th reunion from Trenton and had so much fun.
KK: Tell us about your family.
Adkins: I am married to my husband, Michael Adkins, and in June it will be 30 years. We have four children — 3 daughters and one son — between us and 10 grandchildren. My mother, who lives with us and we have lots of siblings, nieces and nephews.
KK: How long have you been with the Realtors association?
Adkins: I have been with the Down River Association of Realtors as the CEO since April 1999. Prior to working for the association I was a broker/owner of my own real estate company. I had been a licensed Realtor since 1976. I have worn many hats in the industry including salesperson, manager, and broker/owner. I at one time worked for a title company. I have also been involved at the DRAR in several capacities including committee member, committee chair, director, secretary, treasurer, vice president and president of the DRAR in 1996. I have served as president of the Michigan Realtors Association Executive Council, Board of Director for the Michigan Realtors and numerous committees at the Michigan Realtors and National Association of Realtors level.
KK: What are your other interests or hobbies?
Adkins: I love to play golf — which isn’t too often and I don’t play well — arts and crafts, and I love planning events. I love spending time with family and friends. Real estate has always been my passion and I guess that’s why I have hung in here for 41 years.
KK: What is something most people would not know about you?
Adkins: Well not too much (laughing). My life seems to be an open book. Those who are close to me know but my mother lives with us. She has been with us for five or six years. I feel blessed that I can do this for her. She is unable to live alone and I believe I have been able to prolong her life (God helped, too). It’s an interesting position to be in; a child taking care of a parent. Taking care of her has taught me so much. I know more than anything that everyone needs an advocate and I am hers. My family helps and my granddaughter Paige watches her during the day so that I can work.
KK: What would your neighbors say about you?
Adkins: That she’s wild and crazy! Not really; I’m pretty quiet at home. I think they would say she doesn’t cause any trouble, so she’s a pretty good neighbor.
