The nonstop fun and excitement of the PNC Roar on the River weekend kicks off Friday, July 20, at Elizabeth Park in Trenton with “A Taste of the Races,” a delectable taste-fest featuring a huge selection of the region’s best restaurants and caterers.

More than 30 establishments are expected to participate this year, including several newcomers. The Roar kickoff night also has been designated at “Pirate Night at the Races,” a new party twist encouraging attendees to dress in pirate garb rather than Hawaiian attire.

Organizers say the best-dressed pirates and wenches will have a chance to win prizes.

Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door, and $30 each for groups of 10 or more.

They can be ordered online at www.trenton-roarontheriver.com, or purchased in person at Trenton City Hall, 2800 Third St.; Jocks & Associates, 3630 West Road; or DotCom Web Productions at 2674 West Jefferson Ave., Suite 102.

The Friday night activities at the Roar include a free outdoor concert. The entertainment on the waterfront is expected to get under way at about 7 p.m., featuring the Marley-ritaville Band.

Rick Lieder’s Marley-Ritaville Band has been entertaining crowds with their unique combination of “feel good” music for many years. From Buffet to Beach Boys, from Marley to Harry Bellefonte, concert-goers will be chilling to the hot sounds that bring back memories of summers past. Everyone from kids to seniors has expressed their “love” for this band.

The list of restaurants, which hadn’t yet been finalized as of press time, includes a wide range of the region’s favorites. Those that have sign on thus far are A Serendipity Cakery, ABC Catering, All American Buffet, Applewood Nursing Center, Brooklyn’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Café West, Catering by Kellie, Chocolate Fantasies, Coconut Bay Distributors, Cold Stone Creamery, Crystal Gardens, Eldorado Restaurant, Edible Arrangements, Famous Dave’s, Fratello’s Restaurant, Gordon Food Service, Jeanne’s Catering, Jet’s Pizza, McCaffery’s, Mom’s Family Restaurant, Mr. Pit Master Barbeque, Mr. Nick’s Restaurant, Parthenon Coney Island, Rhapsody, Savannah’s, Sharkey’s Riverfront Tavern, Sibley Gardens, Silver Shores, Soltz’s Quality Meats & Catering, Tijuana’s Mexican Kitchen, TV’s Deli & Diner, TV’s Grand Event, Walmart and Winedotte Wines.

Admission to the concert is free, but a $5 donation is requested for parking inside the park. Beverage and food concessions will be open throughout the evening.

Power boat racing again will be the key focus of the 62st annual Roar weekend, as racers in six outboard hydroplane classes graze the water Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22 — some at speeds nearing 120 mph. The featured races of the weekend are the world championships of the SST 45 and SST 120 classes.

The PNC Roar on the River is a non-profit event organized by the Trenton Rotary Club as a local community service project.
