Holbrook’s Roofing Co. has served Trenton residents and the Downriver community for more than 30 years. During that time, the roofing business has changed a lot, but the owner’s business philosophy has not.
Greg Holbrook has owned and operated the business on West Jefferson since it opened its doors 36 years ago. A lifelong Trenton resident, he graduated from Trenton High School and is a veteran of the U.S. Army, as he enlisted after his brother was killed in Vietnam. He served until he was sent home on a hardship discharge when his father was killed in an accident in 1974. “I had to come home to take care of my mom,” he said.
Holbrook came home and found a job at Chrysler’s Trenton Engine Plant. He was indefinitely laid off and needed to find work. He found a job at a local roofing company and was soon running his own crew. He was called back to work at the auto plant but the pay was too good at the roofing job so he never went back. He opened his own business in 1980.
Holbrook’s company offers residential and commercial roofing products, as well as gutter, siding and window replacement. His company currently employs 12 people, and if needed, uses subcontractors to complete specialized jobs.
Holbrook’s Roofing Co. is fully licensed, bonded and insured and is also a Master Elite Certified Contractor for the GAF/Elk Corp.
“This means I can give a warrantee through the factory that will protect customers’ purchase of shingles for a lifetime,” he said. His company offers no-charge estimates.
In order to receive such a classification, his employees must attend classes on how to install the product. In addition, his employees must attend classes and be certified to complete certain jobs. For instance, someone using a blow torch must be certified to use a torch on the job site. His employees also complete all MIOSHA and OSHA-required safety programs and classes.
Holbrook recommends that consumers research contractors to see if they have their safety certifications updated.
He estimates that the cost to replace a roof will go up in the next few years, as shingles are a petroleum-based product. Markets determine the cost for shingles.
“If you need a new roof within the next three or four years, you should consider it,” he said.
If you drive by Holbrook Roofing Co., you’ll see a help-wanted sign in the front. A sign, said Holbrook, is up almost all the time. He is hiring people who want to work and want to learn. “Roofing can be a good-paying job. It just depends on how much you want to learn.”
Holbrook believes his company’s reputation speaks for itself. “People want a company that will take care of them.”
Holbrook is a family man who’s been married for 40 years. He has three daughters and six grandchildren. He’s a member of the Trenton Business Association.
Holbrook hopes to serve the Downriver community for many more years.
“Roofing is a necessity. It’s hard work, but rewarding.”
